When you're actually playing, just hold down r1 to get into listen mode, and then hit circle whenever you want to send out one of those sonar pulses. Something interesting i've noticed is that you can actually spam the scan pretty frequently, though you'll only see stuff that's currently accessible – like if something's behind a locked door it won't show up until you can actually get to it.

I usually end up using this a ton when i'm trying to be thorough in an area, since it makes finding collectibles way less frustrating than just running around hoping to spot them naturally.
